Client reviews

In their words

Verified reviews from Upwork engagements. All 5.0.

"Ivy is the rare designer who asks the right questions before touching anything visual. From our first conversation she identified exactly why our brand wasn't working. We needed something that could win over end users and budget approvers at the same time. She built a system that does both. The work itself is exceptional. Logo, type, colour, guidelines. All cohesive, all intentional. She delivered ahead of schedule, communicated clearly throughout, and pushed back when she needed to. If you're building a brand that needs to do real business work, hire Ivy."

Brand StrategyIdentity SystemB2B Tech

Fuseline

An infrastructure and connectivity platform that needed to look like something buyers could bet their operations on.

RoleBrand Strategist & Creative Director
ScopePositioning · Naming architecture · Identity system · Guidelines
SectorB2B Technology / Infrastructure
Fuseline brand identity and logo design applied across product UI, business cards and out of home campaign
01

The Problem

Fuseline sells integration infrastructure in a category where every brand sounds identical: pipes, plugs and promises of seamless connectivity. The buyers are technical leads and procurement teams who have seen a hundred middleware pitches. A brand that looked like another startup would get filed with the other startups. The real problem was not visibility. It was credibility at the moment of evaluation.

02

The Process

I started with a competitor audit across the integration and iPaaS space to map the visual and verbal sameness, then defined a positioning territory the category had left open: connection under load. Not connectivity as a promise, but infrastructure that holds when it matters. From there I built the naming architecture, the messaging hierarchy, and an identity system where every element, from the mark to the diagram language, expresses load-bearing reliability rather than decoration.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A full identity system: logo, type, colour, diagram language and guidelines built for the contexts where the brand actually gets judged, which are procurement decks, technical documentation and sales conversations. Fuseline now presents as infrastructure, not aspiration. The system gives every future asset a position to execute against instead of a style to imitate.

Brand StrategySaaSRegulated Industries

Latch

Identity and access management software for regulated industries, where looking like a startup loses the deal.

RoleBrand Strategist
ScopePositioning · Messaging framework · Identity system
SectorB2B SaaS / Security
Latch brand identity and logo design applied to building signage, app icon and business cards
01

The Problem

Latch sells identity and access management to regulated industries. The buyer is a risk-averse security lead whose career depends on not choosing wrong. In that room, cleverness reads as risk. The existing brand language leaned on startup energy, which meant the product was losing trust before the demo started. The brand had to communicate control before it communicated anything else.

02

The Process

I mapped the actual decision chain: security leads, compliance reviewers, procurement. Each has a different fear, and the messaging framework was built to answer those fears in order. The identity followed the same logic: restrained, systematic, engineered for the documents that close enterprise deals rather than the landing page that starts them. Every choice was tested against one question: does this make a compliance reviewer more comfortable or less?

03

Resolution & Outcome

A positioning and identity system designed for the enterprise sales cycle: messaging hierarchy, visual identity, and templates for procurement decks and compliance documentation. Latch now walks into regulated conversations looking like it belongs there. Control first. Cleverness where it earns its place.

Brand IdentityPackaging DesignRetail

Marimart

Retail in a category where every shelf is shouting and most of it looks like a discount.

RoleBrand Designer & Creative Director
ScopeLogotype · Colour system · Packaging · Retail environment · Guidelines
SectorRetail / Consumer
Marimart retail brand identity, logotype and packaging design applied to pouches, signage and tote bags
01

The Problem

The commercial risk in this category is price-led perception. Look cheap once and you spend the rest of the brand’s life defending margin against the shelf next to you. Marimart needed warmth and confidence at the same time — a brand people carry out of the shop rather than bin at the door — and it needed to survive being printed on a pouch, a fascia and a tote without falling apart in any of them.

02

The Process

I started with the logotype, because in retail the name does most of the work at three metres. From there I built a magenta and green system with enough contrast to hold under shop lighting and enough restraint not to read as novelty. Then I applied it across packaging, tote bags, window graphics, shopfront signage and in-store material, testing each application at the size and distance it actually gets seen at rather than on a screen at 100%.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A full visual identity and brand guidelines set the retail team can extend without me in the room. The brand looks the same on a bag as it does on a building, and the packaging system takes new product lines without a redesign each time.

Vantage Governance Partners

ESG and compliance advisory, launched against the IFRS S1 and S2 disclosure deadlines.

RoleBrand Strategist & Creative Director
ScopePositioning · Messaging · Identity system · Document system · Guidelines
SectorProfessional Services / Governance
Vantage Governance Partners corporate brand identity, monogram and report system applied to stationery and presentation
01

The Problem

Advisory brands in this space all default to blue, stock photography and reassurance, which makes them impossible to tell apart and easy to negotiate down on fee. The buyer is a CFO who has already been pitched by four firms this quarter and has stopped reading the difference. Vantage needed to signal judgment rather than comfort, and it needed to do that before anyone got to the credentials slide.

02

The Process

I built the positioning around verification instead of assurance — the line the brand runs on is that Vantage shows the working. That decision drove everything downstream: a restrained monogram, a disciplined type hierarchy, and a document system covering readiness reports, board correspondence and presentation decks. In advisory the deliverable is the brand, so the report template got the same attention most studios reserve for a homepage.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A professional services identity where a seven-page readiness report does more selling than the website does. The system gives the firm a consistent voice across the contexts where the work is actually judged: procurement, board papers and the first fifteen minutes of a pitch.

Brand IdentityGuidelinesWellness

Anchor Wellness Club

A wellness membership brand in a category that has settled on the same beige everywhere you look.

RoleBrand Designer & Creative Director
ScopeScript logotype · Palette · Art direction · Merchandise · Guidelines · Web
SectorWellness / Membership
Anchor Wellness Club script logo and warm neutral brand identity applied to apparel, tote and social
01

The Problem

Sameness is the commercial problem here. A membership brand that looks like every other membership brand ends up competing on price and location alone, which is the one fight a new club cannot win. Anchor needed to feel personal and considered without tipping into precious, and it needed to hold up on a sweatshirt, a candle, a booking page and a phone screen.

02

The Process

I refined the script logotype until it worked as both a full lockup and a standalone mark, then built the guidelines around it: a warm sand and deep brown palette, a photographic direction with actual rules rather than a mood board, and a merchandise and apparel system. From there it went through to the website build, which is where most identity systems come apart if the type and spacing were never specified properly.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A brand identity and guidelines document the client can hand to any photographer, printer or developer and get consistent work back. The mark carries the brand on its own at small sizes, which matters more for a membership business than the full lockup ever will.

NovaSync

Technology, where the default is a dark theme, a gradient, and a logo you forget by the next tab.

RoleBrand Designer & Creative Director
ScopeMark · Type hierarchy · Colour system · Art direction · Guidelines
SectorTechnology / Software
NovaSync technology brand identity, violet mark and typographic system applied to product UI and print
01

The Problem

The stakes here are distinctiveness. In a crowded market a generic identity means the marketing spend works for the category rather than for you — people remember the idea and buy from whoever they saw last. NovaSync needed presence at the premium end without borrowing the same visual language as every other platform doing the same thing.

02

The Process

I built a deep violet system with a proprietary mark rather than a set-and-forget wordmark, then a controlled typographic hierarchy that pairs an editorial serif against a technical sans so the brand can be warm in marketing and cold in product without looking like two companies. Assets were prepared motion-ready and applied across web, product screens, social and print.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A visual identity system that stays recognisable when the colour drops out, which is the real test of a tech brand. It runs across digital marketing material without needing a redesign each campaign, and the type hierarchy gives the team a way to write long-form without the brand going quiet.

KBB & Associates

A 3D architectural visualisation firm whose work was world-class and whose brand said otherwise.

RoleBrand Strategist & Designer
ScopeBrand audit · Repositioning · Full identity · Collateral · Guidelines
SectorProfessional Services / Architecture
01

The Problem

KBB's renders compete internationally. Their brand did not. Corporate and developer clients were forming a first impression from the identity that the portfolio then had to fight against. When your output is precision and your brand is generic, the gap costs you the clients who never get far enough to see the work.

02

The Process

A full brand audit against the firms KBB actually competes with, then repositioning around what developers and corporate clients buy: certainty before construction. The identity was rebuilt from strategy up, with a collateral system covering proposals, presentations and project documents, because in professional services the proposal is the brand experience.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A complete rebrand: strategy, identity, collateral system and brand guidelines. The first impression now matches the render quality, and the firm pitches at the level its work has always deserved. Credibility closed the gap that portfolio volume alone could not.

Campaign SystemNonprofitAnniversary

Africa Cancer Foundation

A 15th anniversary system for one of Kenya’s most important health nonprofits.

RoleBrand Designer & Creative Director
ScopeAnniversary identity · Brand guide · Print · Merchandise · Patterns
SectorNonprofit / Health
01

The Problem

Fifteen years of work deserved more than a logo with a number in it. The anniversary had to live across events, volunteer apparel, certificates, water bottles, banners and partner communications, produced by different hands at different times. Without a system, the milestone would fragment into a dozen inconsistent artefacts.

02

The Process

I designed the anniversary mark and built outward: a repeating pattern system, colour and type rules, and application guidelines tight enough that a volunteer t-shirt and a partnership certificate would clearly belong to the same celebration. Everything was delivered production-ready, because nonprofit timelines do not leave room for revision rounds.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A full anniversary brand system: guide, event banners, volunteer apparel, certificates, merchandise and patterns, all shipped print-ready. The 15th anniversary showed up consistent across every touchpoint, and the Foundation now holds a system it can keep using beyond the milestone year.

Brand IdentityCreative AgencyKenya

Beyond The Image

A Kenyan creative agency that needed its own brand to match the standard it sells.

RoleBrand Strategist & Designer
ScopePositioning · Identity system · Brand architecture
SectorCreative Services
01

The Problem

Agencies are the hardest brands to build because everything reads as self-reference. Beyond The Image was selling brand excellence with an identity that undersold it, in a Nairobi market crowded with agencies making the same claims in the same visual language.

02

The Process

The strategy was restraint with a point of view: position the agency around the standard of its client work, then design an identity disciplined enough to frame that work rather than compete with it. Brand architecture was set so the agency stays recognisable while the portfolio stays the hero.

03

Resolution & Outcome

An identity and positioning system that makes the client work do the talking while keeping Beyond The Image unmistakable. The agency now practises what it pitches, which in this market is the whole argument.

Full BrandStory-led WebLifestyle

Rooted & Reckless

A full brand built from the name up, delivered through a story-led website.

RoleBrand Strategist, Namer & Designer
ScopeNaming · Brand strategy · Identity · Website
SectorLifestyle
01

The Problem

This one started from zero: no name, no identity, no site. The risk with from-scratch brands is coherence, where the name says one thing, the identity another, and the website a third. Everything had to carry a single story or nothing would.

02

The Process

Naming came first, and the tension inside Rooted & Reckless became the strategy: grounded and untamed at once. The identity was built to hold that tension, and the website was structured editorially, with the narrative arc carrying the brand as much as the visuals. My journalism training did the heavy lifting here: the site reads like a story because it was written as one.

03

Resolution & Outcome

A complete brand, from name to live website at rootedandreckless.com. Name, identity and site all tell the same story, which is the only outcome that matters for a brand built from nothing.

About

Hi, I'm Ivy

Journalist by training. Brand strategist by conviction. Founder of Nalo Collective, working from Nairobi with organisations across five continents.

The strongest brands are not defined by how they look. They are defined by how clearly they communicate.

I studied journalism at USIU-Africa, and it never left me. Journalism teaches you to find the real story, cut what does not matter, and write for the reader, not the writer. That is brand strategy. The medium changed. The discipline did not.

Over eight years I have delivered 320+ consulting engagements for organisations across North America, Europe, Africa, Australia and the Middle East, spanning corporate, technology, consumer, nonprofit and public sector. In 2019 I founded Nalo Collective, a brand strategy and creative consultancy that helps organisations solve complex branding and marketing challenges and build consistent brand experiences.

Along the way I have led strategy, product and design as Co-CEO of a creative agency, developed communications platforms for pan-African science convenings, built market-entry brand positioning for international companies expanding into Kenya, and partnered with public sector institutions, all while maintaining Top Rated status on Upwork. The through-line: brand as a strategic driver of growth and long-term business value, not a coat of paint.

2020

Now

Strategy, direction, and the next chapter

Moving deeper into research, problem-solving and creative leadership: the work AI cannot replace and clients cannot skip.

Clarity before craft

If the message is muddy, no typeface saves it. Every engagement starts with what the brand needs to say and who it needs to say it to.

Strategy leads, design follows

Aesthetics without positioning is decoration. I frame every design decision around who the brand needs to win over before touching visuals.

Editorial thinking

My journalism training shapes everything: find the real story, cut the noise, respect the reader. Brands that communicate like good editors get believed.

Trust is the deliverable

Logos launch. Trust compounds. The real output of brand work is an organisation that customers, partners and markets choose with confidence.
